We’ve made no secret of our deep respect for the whole Get Lesta enterprise over the years. What began as a bunch of mates based in Leicester filming skate videos for fun, has rapidly turned into a globally recognised media empire, a soft goods brand and, well, basically the epitome of UK skateboarding really.
If however you frequent any of the message boards of the skateboarding universe then you will also know that the output of Get Lesta divides opinion, to put it mildly.
For some people, (and I include myself in this group), Callun Loomes and his ever expanding troupe of cast members represent everything that is truly inspirational about skateboarding in the UK. The Get Lesta videos are expensive to make, involve paying for hundreds of miles of travel up and down the motorways of the country and take up a massive amount of the free time of all those who are involved – whilst rarely making any money beyond breaking even on the cost of physically producing the DVDs.

In an era where Instagram is king and the vast majority of skate content is consumed online, the Get Lesta crew also insist on making DVDs and hosting real-life premieres. For me, that shows a remarkable dedication to the art of skate video-making and maintains a hold on an aspect of skateboarding culture that is rapidly disappearing.
The fact that the likes of Thrasher are also happy to jump on each of Get Lesta’s video releases and put them in front of millions of skater’s eyes across the globe is reassuring too, in that it proves that our love of this lot’s output is motivated by being able to see the wheat from the chaff, and not just because they are our friends.
