Spirit Quest – Ryan Barlow
Colin Read presents another section from the sprawingly epic Spirit Quest, this time coming courtesy of the grasshopper-like pop of Ryan Barlow. Ryan has been cropping up in various Sam Zentner San Francisco edits (think No Tengo and Cold Beach) over the last couple of years, as well as in Colin Read’s previous video Tengu: God of Mischief, but this is one of the first full parts we’ve seen from him outside of Tengu (which isn’t fully uploaded to the web) and Zach Chamberlin’s Bright Moments.
He definitely doesn’t muck about here, mixing flowing street lines with effortless pop and an eye for approaching a spot differently which makes for solidly enjoyable viewing. Add in Read’s always on point filming and editing techniques, then on top of that throw in the killer animations put together by Cosme (who Kingpin Skateboarding caught up with to discuss the video upon its release) and you have what pretty much jumps out of the screens and has you hunting for the full video immediately. Luckily we’re one step ahead of you, and by scrolling down past the section below you can find details of how you can, in fact, buy said video!
You can get hold of a copy of Spirit Quest via Mandible Claw – or in case you missed Connor Kammerer’s part when we posted that, you get a free digital copy of the full video when you buy the ‘Waltz Through Babylon’ EP featuring the dub he put together to score his section. Using diagetic skate noises on a loop, with a group of musicians playing on the track including none other than Quim Cardona on the melodica, that one is definitely one of the more uniquely presented video parts we’ve seen in a while!
Also bear in mind, buying a copy of the video will undoubtedly help fund Colin’s next independent project – which will undoubtedly be just as innovative and enjoyable as his last two! All hail scene videos, all hail doing it yourself.
