Rob Whiston’s ‘Hate Zine’ West Midlands skate photography and footage

Robert Whiston's Hate Zine - video online

Sidewalk pal and West Midlands mainstay Rob Whiston has just seen fit to put the video that accompanied his recent Hate Zine photo book online for those who missed out on an opportunity to own a physical copy.

Hate Zine was Rob’s own perspective on the ever-active Birmingham and West Midlands skate scene and the 100 page A6 colour photo book consisted of 35mm film and instant film photos covering the very same West Mids scene, primarily focusing on Birmingham city and its landscape.

All the photos were shot by Rob Whiston (a selection of which you can see below), and considering that this was his first attempt at photography and of using film cameras – the project turned out really well.

The accompanying DVD, filmed on a Sony VX2100, served to further showcase West Midland’s street and transition skating with a soul and 80’s electronic sound track.
You can watch the full piece below…

The idea behind the project was, in Rob’s own words, “to produce a completely analogue product, which gave an insight into the environment as much as the skating itself, and to have an organic feel rather than banger after banger.”

The book and video features the following West Midlands heads: Henry Fox, Luke McManus, Zak Lydiard, Jord Lightowler, James Hewett, Ciaran Denison, Alex Ramsell, Brad Edwards, Cam Edwards, Nick Binnington, James Denning, Adrian Jobson, Pete Carron, Tom Gillespie, Jon ‘Duck’ Adams and Sean Baker.

Unfortunately for all you analogue fans out there, Hate Zine is completely sold out but Rob has plans for another release in the coming months. Keep your eyes peeled.
Big up Birmingham forever.
