R.A.D Magazine’s Tim Leighton-Boyce ‘TLB’ podcast interview

Amazing podcast interview from Looking Sideways with Tim Leighton-Boyce

R.A.D Magazine’s Tim Leighton-Boyce AKA ‘TLB’ podcast interview from Looking Sideways

It would be difficult to overstate the significance of the contribution of Tim Leighton-Boyce (TLB) to the global culture of skateboarding, both in the UK and across the pond.
TLB was the editor, chief photographer and general one-man media force behind the golden-era R.A.D Magazine, which at the time, (pre-Internet and back when skateboarding was tiny in comparison to today) was the main source of anything and everything skateboard culture related in the UK.

TLB is notoriously shy of attention so all praise to Matt Barr of Looking Sideways here for persuading Tim to agree to this fascinating hour-long interview, which covers everything from the early days of his involvement in skateboard and BMX photography, through his time steering the R.A.D magazine ship and much, much more.

Anyone with an interest in UK skateboarding history, (and indeed global skateboarding history) needs to take an hour out of their day, sit down with a cup of tea and prepare for an unparalleled history lesson from the man who curated and presented UK skateboarding to the world throughout the lean days of the 70’s/80’s and early 90’s. This R.A.D Magazine’s Tim Leighton-Boyce ‘TLB’ podcast interview is something that many of us have dreamed of hearing for decades – a coup of epic proportions without a doubt.

Whether you know it or not – you will have seen TLB’s iconic photographs on the Internet, (most likely on the amazing @readanddestroy Instagram that is currently being run by fellow R.A.D. magazine staff member Dan Adams) that posts golden archive content on a daily basis. If you don’t do so already, go to their Instagram feed now @readanddestroy and follow. A true gold-mine awaits.

Additionally to giving the back story on his own involvement in the then-nascent world of skateboard media, Tim also talks about starting off working in a skate shop in Harrods in the 1970’s, how skate photography evolved from the earliest days, being head-hunted by Felix Dennis publishing and everything else you’ve ever wanted to know about this foundational era of our shared culture.

After you’ve listened to the Tim Leighton-Boyce ‘TLB’ podcast interview from Looking Sideways here, take your browser for a wander over to the www.whenwewasrad.co.uk website for further archived TLB content and start getting excited for the in-progress R.A.D. Magazine book.
Bravo Looking Sideways and thank you Tim.
