Behind The Cover – February 2011: Chewy Cannon

European Adidas rider and Palace Skateboards pro Chewy Cannon scored the second cover of 2011, landing on the front of Sidewalk issue 173 with a New York wallie 5050, again shot by Sam Ashley.

Read what Chewy has to say below…

Back in February, you treated the Sidewalk readers to some classic shapes deep in a cityscape. Did you shoot this with a cover in mind, or was it a complete surprise when it came out?
I’m pretty sure that it was the first thing I done on the trip, so the last thing I was thinking about was a cover shot. Too busy being hyped on the city!

It was shot on the Palace trip to NYC, right? Who else was with you and what were some of the high points of the trip?
There was the whole team there plus a couple PWBC members, that’s why the trip was so sick cause it was like an OG crew feel.
The best thing was being able to skate everything in the streets and not giving a fuck about planning shit.

Did you have any problems getting onto that thing or any new camera and/or rib breaking moments?
Can’t really remember, pretty sure I took a few spills though. Luh dat shit.

When was your last cover, and are you still stoked on getting one?
Always stoked to get a cover innit, not sure on the last cover though? Think it was a Sidewalk one..

You guys are working on a Palace video, right? How’s that going and when should we be expecting to see it?
We’re just skatin’ man. Dates aren’t really our thing I don’t think. There’s some trill stuff in the pipe though.

How do you go about filming a video part? Do you go out with a filmer and a crew and see where you end up and kind of get inspired on the spot, or do you make lists of the things you want to skate?
I just go skate really, sometimes I got an idea to go somewhere but usually I prefer new shit to session. That’s why trips are so trill.

Who should we be keeping an eye out from the emerging London youth?
LDN youth is strong these days man, I see ’nuff kids killing it at Stockwell and Mile End. It’s real good to see. I don’t remember names, haha. I’m a face guy.

You’ve been super busy with Adidas and Palace this year with The Big Push, Battle of Normandy and a host of other filming trips. What have been some of the highlights and what have you got in store for 2012?
Yeah, it’s been a good year, loads on new spots. Montreal was amazing! Go there if you get the chance, it’s a cross between New York and S.F but they speak French and it’s in Canada, haha. Also they got the British Queen on their money, they are very confused, haha. I think that’s why I liked it ‘coz it’s fucked. Brazil was amazing ‘coz it’s Brazil and there’s dope beaches n’ shit. 2012 is the Palace world take over, so be ready and get a plank for Crimbo. I’m ready for it.

Chewy and the Palace crew hit New York and get “Gangbanging at Ground Zero”…
