The latest Independent Trucks Blow’n Up The Spot feature sees a heavy crew hit the Vans HB Park clover bowl just before the wrecking crew comes in and the bowl gets knocked down with an eye towards remodelling. Whilst not as iconic as its Orange County counterpart, the park which yearly plays host to the Vans Pool Party, this one has still seen plenty of action over the years; and, judging by reactions from various bowl skating luminaries on social media, will be sorely missed depending on how well the revamp comes out.
Darren Navarrette, Peter Hewitt, Omar Hassan, Lance Mountain, Christian Hosoi and Eric Dressen say goodbye in the classic, emotional fashion of smacking trucks and tails into every inch of it, with the classic 80s pool session vibes given added nostalgia by having Youth Brigade* on the soundtrack.
Obviously it’s tough to pick highlights from an edit featuring this calibre of skating, but Hewitt’s various angles of attack on the hips is a treat, as are his air and ollie fakies and the precariously landed switch invert. Darren Navarrette’s deep bag of tricks and tweaked backside airs also get a good airing over the course of this one, while Lance Mountain’s brief appearance sees him snapping fastplants and chewing through coping blocks on a rock and roll slide in a manner which laughs maniacally in the face of the construct known as ‘aging’. In fact, no one in this clip is younger than 40 and once you add in excess digits then the combined age of this clip probably hits somewhere around the 300 mark; in other words, watch this then suck up those complaints about aching limbs and joints and go out for a skate.
*80s melodic hardcore and also the driving force behind BYO Records and the classic punk compilation Someone’s Gonna Get Their Head To Believe in Something.
