Nike SB – Skateboard Shoe Review – Women’s Bruin High

An in depth look and review of the Nike SB 'Women's Bruin High' skate shoe

The Nike SB ‘Women’s Bruin High’ pops the collar on one of Nike SB’s legacy models to create the first skateboard shoe designed specifically for women. With input from Nike SB riders Lacey Baker, Leticia Bufoni, Sarah Meurle, and our own Josie Millard, the ‘Bruin Women’s High’ boasts an enhanced fit which hugs and supports the female foot with a narrower arch, tapered heel and mellower toe piece than what would be found on a standard men’s skateboard shoe.

The ‘Women’s Bruin High’ is built on a vulcanised sole featuring deep herringbone tread for reliable grip and flexibility, with Nike Zoom Air insole providing cushioning in the heel of the shoe. An added toe bumper both assists with flick and adds durability to the toe box, durability that is further improved by the absence of stitching.

The shoe’s upper is made from a combination of textiles, however it is predominantly suede with key pieces of fabric joined at on the side panel, bound with blind stitching and partially covered by a classic Swoosh which provides an extra layer of protection to the stitched area.

A synthetic leather heel counter enforces the shoe’s structure to prevent the area from loosening off over the course of wear. Furthermore, a mesh collar piece – featuring embroidered Nike detailing – is implemented to maintain easy access to the shoe despite its high collar and stiff heel. The ‘Women’s Bruin High’ compensates for a lack of airholes with a tongue that is constructed from the same mesh as the heel, and is thinly padded to promote air circulation.

Alongside the model’s modified shape, the Bruin’s high top construction majorly factors into its support capabilities. Although hard wearing, the suede upper is supple, to allow the ankle freedom to move when performing tricks, but supports and restrains the joint enough to help prevent over-extension which could lead to injury.

With the number of females becoming involved in skateboarding growing exponentially, it’s encouraging to see Nike SB step to the plate and develop footwear that’s specifically created with the needs of females both taken into. Regardless of whether you’re starting out on your seven-ply journey or a seasoned veteran of the scene, we’d highly recommend you give the ‘Women’s Bruin High’ a go.

And with the aforementioned crew all taking active part in the shoe’s development, you can trust that you’re in safe hands.
