HUF – Skateboard Shoe Review – Dyan Rieder – Dylan Slip On

An in depth look and review of the HUF Dylan Rieder 'Dylan Slip On' skate shoe

When Dylan Rieder sadly passed away in October 2016 following a battle with leukaemia, he left an indelible legacy and an impact on skateboarding culture unmatched by virtually any other modern pro skater. During his time in skateboarding’s spotlight, Dylan’s output was a shining example of ‘less is more’: from his elegant, powerful skateboarding itself, to his stripped back and highly influential fashion sense – everything Dylan did created waves across the global skateboarding community.

The origins of the Dylan Slip On skate shoe can be traced back to the vulcanised version of his first Gravis pro model which created a functional and classic vulcanised model while still incorporating the influence of his fashion sense taken from his original dress shoe pro model. Following the demise of Gravis footwear in 2013, Dylan would spend the following year in shoe sponsor limbo before joining HUF Worldwide in an industry-shaking power move alongside his nonchalant best buddy, Austyn Gillette.

Dylan’s first HUF Worldwide model was met with as much controversy as his debut Gravis model, both for its dress-shoe aesthetic and for the accompanying promo video that announced it, yet was still praised for originality and performance. However with great demand for the return of a similar model to his iconic Gravis slip on shoe, HUF followed up with the brand’s own reimaging of the original with the HUF Dylan Rieder Dylan Slip On Skate Shoe.

“HUF’s Hydro-Snuff construction and Ortholite insole provide breathability and comfort whilst the Slip On’s luxurious and formal aesthetic make it a perfect shoe for any occasion off the board too.”

The HUF Dylan Slip On was the first HUF model to utilise their stronger Infinity Rubber compound, (now common across the HUF range) and vulcanised ‘H’ pattern trip outsole to provide ideal flexibility, board-feel and grip. The HUF shoe is more streamlined than its Gravis predecessor however, as the original toe bumper has been removed but without compromising on durability thanks to a thicker sole.

A one-piece toe cap is connected to the sidewall of the shoe with crucial areas of stitching raised high enough to prevent contact with griptape and obviously, due to the shoe’s slip-on design, the need for shoelaces is removed entirely.

An overall slim silhouette, with a grippy sole and durable upper make the HUF Dylan Slip On a fantastic choice for any type of skateboarding. HUF’s Hydro-Snuff construction and Ortholite insole provide breathability and comfort whilst the Slip On’s luxurious and slightly formal aesthetic make it a perfect shoe for any occasion off the board too.

Every pair of the HUF Dylan Slip on also comes with a memorial card, featuring a poem by Dylan’s mentor and close friend Mark Oblow, and a portion of all the proceeds from Dylan’s footwear are donated to the Rieder family. An indisputable modern skate shoe classic.
