Girl – Skateboard Deck Review – Mike Carroll – Select Champion

An overview of Girl Skateboards along with a 'Select Champion' Pro Deck Review

Girl Skateboards was the first of the brands now associated with the Crailtap camp to be established, coming into existence in the August of 1993 and founded by Mike Carroll, Rick Howard, Megan Baltimore and Spike Jonze. The original team was made up of disillusioned riders defecting from Mike Ternasky’s Plan B and Steve Rocco’s World Industries family, namely Carroll and Howard, Tony Ferguson, Sean Sheffey, Guy Mariano, Jovontae Turner, Tim Gavin and Jeron Wilson, with Eric Koston jumping ship from the mythical 101 following the release of their ‘Falling Down’ video in late 1993.

The catalogue of footage that Mike Carroll has produced in the almost quarter of a century since Girl’s creation is some of the most often cited and heavily influential skating ever committed to film, so it stands to reason that he still holds down a pro spot on the company, alongside younger guns like Mike Mo, Sean Malto and recent addition to the Girl squad, Andrew Brophy.

“This ‘Select Champion’ board sees the artist Craig Champion give his spin on the instantly recognisable Girl ‘OG’ logo, modifying the wooden lady with his own personal Mike Carroll approved blemishes”

This ‘Select Champion’ board sees the artist Craig Champion give his spin on the instantly recognisable Girl ‘OG’ logo, modifying the wooden lady with his own personal Mike Carroll approved blemishes. When it comes to shape, the Crailtap camp have always been a fan of a board with minimal kick, and this ‘Select Champion’ deck follows firmly in that tradition. The less imposing concave and slightly shorter tail harks back to the boards of the mid-90s, and thanks to the board control this combo allows whilst skating flatground and ledges, it would definitely be the weapon of choice for the more technically minded modern street skater.
