Travelling and attending skateboard events is one of the best ways to meet new people, make new friends and to progress as a skater.
From Sidewalk Basics – Autumn 2013
Very few things will help your progression like being surrounded by loads of new faces all sessioning a spot or skatepark together.
Travel is the key to this. It doesn’t matter how good you may be at your local spot, if nobody but your friends see you skating then you are never going to get anywhere along the sponsorship route. You need to show willing and turn up.
This goes beyond just questing after ‘making it’ though – travel is one of the greatest rewards as a skateboarder because you can literally travel anywhere in the world and you will meet other skaters and get an insight into their scenes and the places that they skate. This is why you are a skateboarder!
As far as attending events goes – don’t think of it as being solely about the competitive aspect because skateboard events are much more than just that.
Attending events means having fun, skating with new people, getting footage and photos and who knows, if you’re lucky, maybe going home with some cash in your pocket or some new product in your hands.
Be down to travel and the world will open up for you.
