Red Bull, Skate Cafe and Nike SB’s Korahn Gayle takes some time out of his day to tell you about his five favourite skate spots in his hometown of Bristol, and the standout tricks he’s seen go down at each.
Read on…
College Green.
It is just flatground, but sometimes we would bring a box or flatbar and just skate all day long in the sun, and chill on the grass with our friends. The best tricks at College Green were anything that Paul and Steve Alexander did there. They had the best styles and Wainwright level pop!
The First Light Rail.
The First Light Rail was named that because quite a few of us had First Light’s in Sidewalk there. My favourite trick at the First Light Rail would have to be Layth’s frontside flip over it. I always loved his frontside flips and that one was “gurt luuush”!
Victoria Rooms.
I remember skating the little three sets when I was 13 years old and learning tricks there. Now people skate it in so many different ways. My favourite trick has to be Dan Wileman’s gap to noseblunt. I didn’t spot that you could skate the ledge like that before I saw him do that, and now I have I still won’t touch it with a barge pole!
The Fifty Fifty miniramp.
I think it is still there but it has been neglected. It’s another spot that reminds me of the good old days!
Finishing work in the shop and going down to skate it with Louis Marshall, Boyo, Lil’ Chris, Syd, Danny and whoever else was about, and just learning tricks and watching everyone killing it.
My favourite tricks were Danny’s switch and regular front foot impossible nose stalls, and Habgood grinding up the pole on the side!
Lloyds.
Good old Lloyds! The best trick I have seen at Lloyds could quite easily be Layth’s switch tre, Nicky Howell’s bigspin flip, Boyo’s switch flip, Barber’s nollie tre (all down the Big 3), but my favourite trick really has to be Terry Shiimi’s nosegrab. Sadly he has passed away but he’s never forgotten and every time I see that trick it makes me feel like he is still with us. RIP Terry.
