The Nine Club with Chris Roberts episode 82: Josh Stewart

Filming with Jamie Thomas, the Static series, Theories and more

The Nine Club hits its 82nd episode with Static filmmaker and brains behind Theories Josh Stewart sitting down with Chris Roberts, Roger Bagley and Kelly Hart.

For those who’ve been living under a good skateboarding and editing shaped rock since the late 90s – welcome to the legitimacy party! Josh’s Static video series, which kicked off way back in 2000, saw him working with relatively unknown skateboarders to present his own unique cinematography of the streets (and vert ramps, when it came to the vert montage and Paul Zitzer’s part in Static I). After the incredible one two punch of Static’s IV and V left us seeing stars of street skating inspiration (including a much appreciated full part from Quim Cardona), Josh’s energy has been sunk into the associated but separate clothing brand ‘Theories’ and distribution company ‘Theories of Atlantis‘ – the latter of which distributes perennial, independently/skater owned favourites Magenta, Polar, Hopps, Isle Skateboards and Traffic.

Here Josh talks about his entry to filming, Cigar City, twelve block lines with Jamie Thomas, secret box set nods to underground lines, growing up with Ed Selego, cold calling skaters to see if they wanted to be in the first Static video, how slept on East Coast cities were in the 90s and plenty more. Put the kettle on, sit back and enjoy!

“The show that has skateboarders talking – Josh Stewart discusses growing up in Florida, picking up his first video camera, being asked by Jamie Thomas to go on a “Welcome to Hell” tour, filming “Cigar City”, his first “Static” video, making the Adio video “One Step Beyond”, deciding to make more “Static” videos, starting his distribution company Theories Of Atlantis, will there be a “Static 6” and much more!”
