A couple of weeks back, Grim’s Ramp Jam 2018 saw a miniramp jam taking place within Cardiff’s Spit and Sawdust Skatepark in order to build some indoor park hype after an unusually dry summer has kept business somewhat on the quiet side. Freestyle Skate Store owner Grim took the initiative to organise an old school grass roots miniramp session at the park and bring some punters down to the park, owned by skate video auteur Christian ‘Pirate Man’ Hart and serving the needs of Cardiff’s skate scene since 2014.
We all know that indoor parks get little love when the sun shines and, with a few long serving skater owned ventures shutting their doors over the last twelve months, we probably don’t need to tell you that you should show these parks – which, realistically, are lynchpins of a skate community which lies under a thick drizzle for the majority of the year – plenty of love, even when the Vitamin D onslaught shows little signs of slowing down.
Press play below for eighteen minutes of enjoyable miniramp fun from Welsh Allan, Sketchy Huw, Youngo, Lee Bennett and more via Underdog Cult, then go out and organise your own jam!
Further Spit and Sawdust love comes via the Cardiff Skateboard Club, with some words in relation to the Pirate Man board they recently dropped;
“Pirate Man, Poor-Mans-Russell-Brand, DJ Shitlock, Crippo, MC Froglegs…there’s many names that Christian answers to. However, joke names aside, the man is almost somewhat of an unsung hero of Cardiff skateboarding. After being the AV mastermind behind timeless videos like Join Us and Now! That’s What I Call Skateboarding, P-Man opened a place that maybe some of us kinda take for granted; Spit and Sawdust.
He’s the guy who’s been in the gutters pointing a toaster with a deathlens at people, bringing the hype to every session, flipping the most delicious burgers in Spit’s kitchen. Safe to say, Cardiff would be a bit shitty without Christian. Big love mate!”
