Transworld Skateboarding presents 411VM Issue 2

Tom Penny Wheels of Fortune!

Following on from their drop of the first one on April the 11th (4/11 in the States, geddit?), Transworld thankfully decided to continue their uploading of classic 411’s with 411VM Issue 2 going online today. The long running series was, pre-internet, the easiest way for many to get a glimpse into a wide ranging swathe of the world of pro skateboarding – from event coverage, to the not so long running ‘switch stance’ section, to sections from various heads who would go on to become some of the biggest names in skateboarding. This one has some heavy hitting shit in it including the legendary Tom Penny Wheels of Fortune, so put aside an hour of your day and let that familiar drum roll take you by the hand and guide you down the nostalgic, small wheel-strewn path of skateboarding in 1993…

Kicking off with the iconic 411 intro is not normally something I’d focus on, but when it includes Mike Frazier putting down a front blunt in Harrow’s cheese grater halfpipe then it definitely deserves a mention. Go there, look at that thing and feel the sweat break out on your palms even at the thought of attempting such stupidity. If you follow him on Instagram, which you should, then you’ll know that he could probably still do this if he came back today…

Jason Rothmeyer shows us his Star Wars-themed bedroom in his Profiles, a Munster comp report sees various names misspelled before whoever was in charge of that department gave up all together resulting in somebody being titled ‘From Switzerland’ and the following Belgian contest reminds us that, at one point in skateboarding, using NOFX songs in videos was not only allowed but was actively encouraged. The 1993 Radlands Jam, meanwhile, sees Carl Shipman and Tom Penny begin to make a dent on skateboarding’s collective consciousness – a dent which is further imprinted by the Teeps Wheel of Fortune which sees him deal out further Radlands-based destruction.

A Consolidated Industry section sees Alan Peterson charging a fresh looking Burnside, the video mag gets worked up at the Encinitas YMCA, Mike Manzoori and more deal Harrow a further beating, Dirk Winkleman does a nollie flip in clogs to introduce the Holland section of the World Report, I could go on but you should probably just stop reading and press play right?
