So Ross, how many NASS Festivals deep are you rolling now?
Damn, quite a lot! I’ve missed a few random years but i reckon I’ve been roughly ten times or more…
Can you remember your first time?
Yes, really well. Nic Powley brought me there in the back of his transit van when I was about 14yrs old, and I think I placed well because I came back with a trophy full of cash. I’m pretty sure Powley has a photo of me asleep in the back of his van cuddling the trophy hahaha!!
What is it that sets NASS apart from other skate contests?
Well, for a start there aren’t many skate comp events like that left in the U.K. - and its’ the only one I know of in a festival environment.
What's your highest placing so far and what was the secret to your success that year do you think?
I’ve won it in the past. Secret to success- I’d say leaving the drum n bass tent before 5am probably helps!
What's the best trick that you can remember seeing over all your years of NASS attendance?
Dan Wileman’s crook down the double kink rail last year. He did it so easily, it was dope!
What about your favourite obstacle or set up from over the years?
The mini mega ramp set-up was mental. That thing was scary!
What's your funniest memory of NASS from over the years?
I’ve seen a lot of mad shit go down at NASS over the years, from full scale riots to tents being blown up and a brawl in the riders area between the BMXers and skaters. The funniest was probably the first year I went there and chilling with Powley, Munson, Habgood and those lads. We were on a bench by one of the main drags people watching and listening to those guys just shouting abuse at people walking by, it was hilarious!
Do you have any go-to tricks for contests? Like stuff that you know you'll land 99% of the time to get things going?
Probably back three nose grabs over the box. They’re usually a safe crowd pleaser…
Aside from the skate side - what brings you back to NASS every year?
The same as most people I reckon - hanging out with cool heads you might not see too often and skating some massive BMX jumps you wouldn’t find in many skate parks these days.
What about music-wise, who've you seen play there who have impressed you?
Jurassic 5 were pretty good last year.
Is there anything in particular that you're looking forward to this year?
The BMX finals are insane! I always stay after the skate thing to watch that.
Finally, sum up NASS in three words.
Skateboarding Freak Show.
Here's Ross claiming second place back in 2014.
