Sunday Service: Frank Stephens – “Day in the City 1” (2001)

The marriage of Frank Stephens hitting up the streets of London, an Aphex Twin soundtrack and some madcap antics/filming/editing meant that Frank and Richard “Badger” Holland’s entry into the very first Day In The City VHS release back in 2001 was a definite highlight of the project.

Here’s a couple of paragraphs from Badger about getting the edit together…

“Having a real time schedule for this was no real challenge for me and Frank, we both don’t own a camera so up to Thursday, the day before, we were going to each other “f*ck”. We then got three digital cameras and thought we were saved but none of them worked at all, on the Friday we managed to get two with one battery each, so halfway through the day we had to go and recharge. It was OK though because we had a nice cup of tea.”

“Video making secrets? Well the screen is 768 by 576 pixels at 72 DPI. And the edit machines are made out of gold with little people running about inside throwing sticks at each other. Some colours you need to make broadcast safe, and it always takes ages to render, the Unabomber video had a total of 75gigs of footage.
Frank’s hair is not real.”

This oddity has been much sought after by Frank fans over the years, so enjoy the fact that this eccentric nugget of UK skate history is finally online after a decade of floating about in obscurity – click play below to get watching…
