Interviews

Nottingham by Will Golding

We head to Nottingham for this weeks interview, as Una-Youth Will Golding fills you in on the best bits of the city…

Wills’ Nottingham

Best breakfast spot: Jurassic Snax, Mapperley Top or Sainsburys in Arnold.
Best form of transportation: Bus/Car into town then skate to the spots. They’re all pretty close to each other so you can roll to the next spot.
Best skate shop: Nonstop Skateshop. There are a few others, like Two Seasons and the Element shop, but I know the owner and the staff in Nonstop so it’s always super chilled and the discount is always a nice treat!
Best record shop: Fopp? I hardly every buy music.
Best local band: This one was a hard one. I’ve got plenty of mates who are in “screemo” rock bands and I’ve been told they’re pretty good, but I’m not into that sort of stuff. This is my mates band, its pretty chilled, and not “screemo”…The Sherbrooks.
Best local video: “Down Our End” – Nise Skateboards. Nise is a Nottingham born skate company who put together a video not long ago. Check out the website – www.niseramps.com
Best local video section: Josh Checkley “Is this it?” – My friends crew from just outside Nottingham. Sick video part!
Best local – back in the day: Gaz Jenkins or Harry Bastard, both of them could probably ollie me stood up!
Best local – present: This one was hard too. They all kill it. There are so many more! Best 3: Phil Long, Jim Knight and Sam McAteer.
Best skate spot – back in the day: Market Square/Broadmarsh Banks. Both of them got sadly demolished. People took bricks from when Broadmarsh banks got demolished because it meant that much to them!
Best skate spot – present: Amphitheater maybe? Just because of some of the stuff thats been done. Although we keep taking wrong turns down dead end roads to find the most amazing untouched spots, so I guess the “best” spot hasn’t yet been found.
Best undercover spot: NCP Carpark – Rusty, high, metal rails that have got death written all over them. Perfect when you’re keen to get a sweat on!
Best skatepark – back in the day: Lady Bay when it was just a mini-ramp. Now it has a block, flatbank, rail, mannypad, quarter and a funbox. The mini recently got resurfaced by the locals. Smooth and ice and painted bright red. Stoked!
Best skatepark – present: Arnold Bowl. This is personal opinion because it’s where I did most of my skating when I was young. Plus the locals are like family and the BMXers there are the only ones I can stand to talk to.
Best bar: Bar Eleven. Tuesday nights are amazing.
Best nightclub: Rescue Rooms. Saturday nights are also amazing.
Best restaurant: Wetherspoons opposite Nonstop. Beer and a burger, £4.99. I’m sure its the same deal in every Wetherspoons, but I like the atmosphere in this one. Haha.
Best local slang phrase: “Y’all rate my duck?” (“Are you OK, mate?”)
Best point of local interest/tourist must see: Robin in the Hood/Brian Clough
Best local celebrity: Smedley? Ha! I don’t know who to say for this. Carl ‘the cobra’ Froch is from Mapperley, he’s pretty famous. He’ll do…
Best thing about living in Nottingham: Nottingham Forest! Family/friends are here. Now that I can drive I’m getting about a few places and getting out of Nottingham a bit more. But its always nice to come back again.
